It began when Manoel Pedro Guimaraens bought an old company called Fonseca Montillo. He was also a politician, but unluckily, he was pursued by his political opponents and went to England, hiding in a barrel of port. However, even after moving his home base to England, his business as a port wine sipper remained very successful, and after his death, in 1927, Fonseca Guimaraens returned to Porto. Today, the business is run the old-fashioned way by Bruce Guimaraens and his son David.
