The most commonly mentioned possibility is that Batailley derives from "battle" in memory of the battles that would have taken place there at the end of the Hundred Years War. The presence of a wine estate is attested at the end of the eighteenth century. Daniel Guestier, founder of the great trading house "Barton et Guestier", acquired the estate in 1816. He devoted significant resources to it, extended the vineyard, renovated the cellars and the castle and, improving the quality of the wine, allowed it to be classified 5th grand cru in 1855.
